Look forward to more football
Fridays in the future, as the Warriors came from behind with a
13 yard pass from Nick Rolovich to Ashley Lelie with 14
seconds to go, to beat the 19th ranked Fresno St. Bulldogs.
Lead, by a bend-but-not-break defense, and a timely offense -
The Warriors won their first game against a ranked opponent
since 1990. In the process, they have set themselves up
for a possible bowl bid with five games to go. |
Heisman candidate and Sports Illustrated cover-boy, David Carr,
amassed 400 yards passing and 4 TDs against UH, but also threw one
interception, and lost two fumbles which lead to 18 Warrior points.
Warrior quarterback Rolovich passed for 348 yards and 3 touchdowns all
in the fourth quarter, the last one, with and injured left arm, that
took him out of the game.
Game Balls go to: the UH Warrior run defense, who held All-WAC running
back Paris Gaines to 46 yard rushing: Ashley Lelie, for his nine
reception-122 yard-2 TD game, including three NFL quality clutch
catches: and Nick Rolovich for his tremendous second half performance.
The HAWAII411.COM "Da Man" award would have gone to Ashley
Lelie for his tremendous performance, if not for the courageous effort
from the Pride of Waianae - Nate Jackson. After suffering a
severe leg injury in a motorcycle accident on Monday, Nate Jackson
sucked it up like a true Warrior, and turned in two game breaking
plays. With Fresno St. threatening to score from Hawaii's three
yard line, Jackson came up with a fumble recovery. With less
than three minutes remaining in the game, and the Bulldogs running out
the clock with at 34-31 lead, Nate Jackson nailed Carr with a
bone-crushing blindside hit, jarring the ball lose, leading to
Hawaii's go ahead score. Most mere mortals would have had a hard
time walking, let alone playing in a Division I football game, but
Jackson is a Warrior, and showed why he is the heart of the UH
defense. While the team celebrated in the middle of the field,
Jackson picked up his infant son from the sidelines, so he could share
in the Warrior triumph.
Yes, Hawaii, look forward to more Friday football, because the
Warriors are a team the entire nation should see. Warrior
football is back, so get your tickets now!

 In the November 5, 2001
issue of Sports Illustrated on page 73, Nate Jackson is cited for his
courageous play against Fresno State in their "YA GOTTA LOVE THIS
GUY" column. It reads:
"Four days before Hawaii's
home game last Friday against Fresno State, Warriors senior free safety
Nate Jackson crashed on his motorcycle while trying to avoid a car that
he says suddenly stopped in front of him. Jackson, who has a
75-minute ride between his home on Oahu's leeward coast and the campus
in Honolulu, suffered a deep gash in his right leg that required two
layers of stitches. Two days later, Jackson, a former walk-on,
appeared at practice on crutches. He also didn't participate in
the next morning's workout. Against the 18th-ranked Bulldogs the
following afternoon, Jackson sat out the first quarter but then played
35 to 40 plays, making two tackles, recovering one fumble and forcing
another that led to the winning touchdown in Hawaii's 38-34 upset."
It seems that SI agrees with
